The most destructive coffee tree disease is caused by the hemileia vastatrix. Such disease has occurred in the coffee-planted areas of Africa, near east, India and Asia for a long time. However, it firstly occurred in Brazil of the western hemisphere in 1970. The once thriving coffee plantations in Sri Landa and Java had been destroyed by this disease. In recent years, the coffee rust has prevailed in the Central America. As a result, the output of coffee dropped largely with serious loss caused. The symptoms of the disease are as follows: The yellow oil stain appears on the surface of leaf, then becomes the larger orange-to-red circle stain and at last becomes brown with yellow edge. The rust sorus on the lower leaf surface is orange and then becomes black. The sick leaves are dropped and then falls off and the plant will be dead within several years. The control method is spraying the funguide in the damp seasons. The coffee plantations in some area have been transferred to the cooler places with altitude of 1,800-2,100 meters (6,000-7,000 feet), where the rust is not easy to produce.

[Pathogeny]
Two varieties of pathogen: Hemileia vastatrix, caused the yellow rust and Hemileia coffeicola, caused the grey rust.
[Symptoms]
The symptoms mostly appear on the leaves and seldom appear on the fruits and sticks. After infected by the rust, the slight yellow water-stain-like scab firstly appears on the lower leaf surface with slight green halo surrounded. When the scab enlarges to 5-8 mm, the orange powder-like sorus will grow out of the pore on the sick part. The scab becomes larger and larger and several scabs will connect into an irregular big scab and at last the centre of scab will dry up and become brown. The brown scab can be seen on both side of the leaf.
[Prevention and Treatment]
Agricultural measures: 1. To properly grow shade trees in the coffee plantation; 2. To make full use of the ecological effect of wind break forest; 3. To carry out reasonable closely-planting; 4. To keep the plantations clean; 5. To reasonably fertilize; 6. To select the anti-disease varieties.
Biological pesticides measures:
1. To make up a prescription: Adding 30 kg (300 times) water into 100 ml oligosaccharins (special for coffee tree), then mixing them as the spraying liquid drug.
2. Time of spraying and frequency: The first spraying shall be carried out 1 month before the prevailed season or at the macular period (Hainan Province: from the late August to middle September; West of Guangdong: from the middle August to early September). The first spray for prevention shall be the oligosaccharins (special for coffee tree) plus the Yuanfeng biological peptides plant nutrients (prevention combined with nutrition) and since then spraying oligosaccharins (special for coffee tree) once every three months and spraying Yuanfeng biological peptides (adding water for 300 to 400 times) once every two months. You will have good effect when you spray 3 to 4 times in Yunnan area and 2 to 3 times in Hainan Province and the west Guangdong.
3. Usage: Firstly the qualified high-pressure sprayer (Pressure: 2-3kg/cm2) shall be chosen. Then the liquid drug shall be filled into the sprayer. At last the upper and lower leaf surfaces and trunk of tree shall be sprayed for 70 sprays every square centimeter.
4. Cautions: The spraying shall be carried out on the sunny day, before 9:00 a.m or after 4:00 p.m. If it rains within 2 days when spraying, it shall be sprayed again.
